🟠 Start in GitHub to Create a New Repository
Create your own GitHub repository for your new project.
Create Your Custom Repository from the Template (Recommended)
This option is fast and easy.
First: Log in to GitHub.
A GitHub template creates a new repository under your GitHub account with the example project's files and folders, but with a fresh Git history.
You should be logged into your GitHub account and viewing the original example project repository.
- Click Use this template (near the green Code button).
- Select Create a new repository.
- Choose your GitHub account as the Owner.
- Select Public.
- Click Create repository.
You now have your own GitHub repository containing the example project.
You will review the important parts of each file and make changes as you work through the project.
Advanced Alternative (a lot more work)
Alternatively, if you have already created several GitHub projects, you may create a new repository and build the project yourself.
Note that many example projects include a fair amount of tooling. These tooling provide silent helpers to ensure project code works, as well as GitHub Actions pre-configured to run CI/CD (continuous integration/continuous deployment) for the project files and documentation.
This option requires more experience and significant additional work.
The following guide explains the important parts of the project files, but does not provide complete instructions for building every component from scratch.
- Log in to your GitHub account.
- In the top-right corner, click the + dropdown menu.
- Select New repository.
- Choose your GitHub account as the Owner.
- Enter a name for your new repository.
- Use all lowercase letters.
- Use dashes between words.
- Do not use spaces or special characters.
- Follow the naming guidance provided in the example project.
- Provide a brief description of your project (optional but recommended).
- Select Public.
- IMPORTANT: Add a Default README File.
- Check the box for Add a README file.
- Click Create repository.
Verification
After this step, you should have your own complete GitHub project repository.
- [ ] I created a new repository based on the example under my GitHub account.
- [ ] I can provide a clickable link to my new custom GitHub repository with all the components of the working example.
